Dark (acne) scars | Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is in the top 3 most common pigmentation spots alongside Melasma and sunspot.

When a wound does not heal properly, a dark scar can appear. This dark scar is dark due to too much pigment, hence the name hyperpigmentation. This is most common after going through acne but this also occurs in eczema, burns, chicken pox, psoriasis, lichen ruber planus and insect bites.

Donkere (acne) littekens | Post-inflammatoire hyperpigmentatieRosenberg has an acne specialisation for during acne breakouts but also for the consequences of acne. In many cases, pigment spot scars disappear but this can take many months. Darker skin suffers more from Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation because this skin is able to produce a lot of pigment.

Can I sunbathe, outdoors or under a tanning bed?

No preferably not, keep Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation away from sunlight

Which treatment works best against Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation?

Glycolic acid is the best choice. Both in high percentage during treatment 40% and lower percentage Glycolic acid 10-12% for at home.

'Superficial chemical peel' with fruit acids.

In a superficial chemical peel, a substance is applied to the skin that accelerates cell division. A kind of "renewal" of the epidermis occurs. As a result, the treated skin will start exfoliating. With the exfoliation, the excessive pigment is expected to be drained. So this ultimately gives a bleaching effect. The most effective acid is glycolic acid which is applied in concentration of 10%-40%. Because of its small molecule size, this acid is easily absorbed through the various layers of the epidermis, where it does its job excellently.

Besides Glycolic Acid Peeling, Microneedling (see photo above) is an effective treatment. Pigmentation that is somewhat deeper is tackled, and this treatment also makes the skin finer in structure (smoother). A combination treatment, the Hydrafacial, is also available.

In addition, you can apply microneedling soft yourself with home 0.50 mm microneedling roller (see photo below). The microneedling roller was once invented in the burn centre. If you also suffer from active acne (whiteheads) do not roll over this.

Should I also wear a cream over Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation?

Yes, preferably use N6 24 hour Skin Care all over the skin and with a brush or cotton swab Egliser. Waterproof camouflage may be applied over this.
